How to improve professional self care using Logosynthesis

Professional self care offers many benefits

As a professional in guided change, you and your clients benefit when you invest in professional self care. The following quote is based on a Sufi teaching tale and is taken from the Government of Canada – Department of Justice page on the importance of self care when dealing with victims of crime:

A farmer was using a well-used, dull, rusted axe to cut a huge oak tree on his property. His neighbour was passing by and saw that the farmer was making no progress at all. “At this rate,” the neighbour thought to himself, “it will take him years to chop that gigantic tree down.” So he said to his friend, “Why don’t you sharpen your axe?” The farmer replied, breathless:  “I can’t (chop)…take the time (chop)…Must cut down (chop)…this tree (chop)…by tomorrow.”

We are faced with increased demands, in our homes, our workplaces and our communities. In addition, we react to the world around us based on our experiences. We can learn to resolve the frozen perceptions that trigger distressing frozen reactions. This allows us to better cope with the demands of everyday life, to enjoy life more fully and to focus on what is important to us – our clients, our families and our own wellbeing.

Professional self care requires that we watch stress and also pursue activities to build personal resources. Logosynthesis offers a model to help us reduce stress, feel better and unlock our potential.

Logosynthesis is a highly preferred model for professional self care

A survey of professionals trained in Logosynthesis offers interesting insights. Respondents use a variety of methods to support self-care including:

  • Self-Coaching
  • Consultation / Supervision
  • Peer Support
  • Continuing Education
  • Healthy Living Techniques
  • Meditation
  • Spiritual Practices

In this survey, Logosynthesis was rated as highly preferred (60%), preferred  (31%) or about the same (9%) by survey respondents.

Reasons cited were: Ease of Use (94%), Overall Effectiveness (91%), Speed of Work (85%) and Self-Coaching Application (77%), along with additional reasons (presence, awareness and prevention of distress).

Furthermore, 59% of respondents perceived ‘no barriers’ to using Logosynthesis for professional self-care. However, a lack of endorsement by professional associations (24%) and lack of funding for training (15%) were cited barriers for individual practise.  When asked about barriers for Logosynthesis for self-care in their profession, the following reasons were cited: No barriers (49%); not endorsed by professional association (34%); not endorsed by employer (26%); lack of funding for training (23%) and not endorsed for continuing education (20%).
