Beliefs about “not enough”.
Beliefs such as “I’m not smart enough” or “I’m not rich enough” may sound familiar—and they’re more common than most of us realize. Despite your achievements, there can still be an inner voice that whispers these lines at the worst possible moment. Despite what others see, you may be stuck in a belief that blocks your ability to enjoy life in the moment. There is always a need to do more and achieve more. It’s frustrating and confusing. Why do these beliefs still show up after all the hard work and success?
Beliefs aren’t logical or rational. They’re not a result of cognitive thinking. They are driven by memories and conclusions derived from past experiences. Despite positive affirmations, limiting beliefs continues to feel true. And these feelings drive patterns of behaviour that operate on autopilot. In the moment, you react.
Think about Jenny. She has prepared all night to present an important proposal on a topic she knows well. She seeks perfection and feels the work is not good enough. In the meeting, she is exhausted. Her voice and posture reflect this, and her audience loses interest. John has worked hard as an electrician. He is wants to start his own business, and others encourage him. Yet, he believes he is not smart enough and he continually procrastinates on meeting with lawyers to do the necessary work.
These stories are neither unfamiliar nor uncommon. So what triggers these behaviours that appear irrational? Beliefs drive behaviour. Many beliefs are adopted early in life, based on what we saw, heard, or experienced as children. They may have served a purpose at the time, but now they quietly sabotage our confidence, performance, and well-being.
Why “Not Enough” Still Lingers After Success
We often push ourselves to do better and achieve more, believing that success will silence these internal doubts. But no matter how many degrees, promotions, or milestones are reached, that inner critic is ready to sabotage at any moment—especially in times of change, conflict, or uncertainty.
That’s because the belief isn’t in your present. It is not a cognitive process. It’s energetic, and you can think of it as mental imagery or sensory perceptions that are frozen in your personal space. That “image in your head” or “voice over your shoulder” is triggered by your present situation, producing an automatic reaction which can feel pleasant or distressing. For example, preparing a presentation may activate a memory of an encouraging parent or a failing result. Your response in the present will be influenced by the nature of the memory that is activated. Often, you and those around you are not aware of what is happening.
From Coping to Resolving with Logosynthesis®
Coping strategies are important. Often, approaches guide you to challenge or reframe these beliefs. This can help, but it often requires constant effort and vigilance. And you may continue to be derailed in the moment. You get stuck arguing your point or worrying about losing your job. The underlying belief remains, along with the automatic reactions that keep you stuck in stress.
Logosynthesis® offers an innovative approach to resolving the blocks. Using a structured technique, you are guided to identify and shift the triggering belief or stressor. When a belief like “I’m not smart enough” is connected to a vivid memory of embarrassment in school, or a comment from a parent or teacher, the memory becomes charged. Logosynthesis® uses the energy and intention of your words to resolve the underlying mental imagery. And when it shifts, the belief loses its charge. The memory is simply something that happened.
Instead of coping with old stories, you create space to respond in the present with calm, clarity, and confidence.
