What is a stressor?

A stressor is defined as “a stimulus that causes stress”. (Merriam Webster) We often think of this stimulus as something external, such as a demanding job, an annoying boss, or our finances. These ‘stressors’ may occur routinely in our lives, creating stressful patterns that lead to anxiety, burnout and mental health issues. These stressors can also lead to reactive behaviour patterns that get in the way of our goals, often without even recognizing the impact. And because we experience these reactions each time this ‘stressor’ is present, we come to believe that these external factors are responsible for our stress.

Mental imagery as a stressor.

Medical research is highlighting that mental imagery plays an important role in our mental health and wellbeing. Positive visualization is used for relaxation and goal setting. On the other hand, intrusive mental imagery and traumatic memories are tied to distressing emotions and mental health disorders.

Experiencing mental imagery is a normal human occurrence. Over 95% of people report mental imagery, with varying degrees of vividness. Importantly, the vividness of imagery is associated with the intensity of emotions, which highlights why some people experience more intense emotions. When the mental imagery is neutralized, the emotional distress falls away. As such, mental imagery is a stressor.

Using Logosynthesis to identify and resolve stressors.

Logosynthesis is a psychotherapeutic and coaching model that identifies and eliminates distressing mental imagery using the power of words. This is based on the understanding that words, mental imagery and emotions are all energetic in nature. When the underlying mental imagery shifts, the distressing thoughts, emotions and physical sensations fall away. Based on published research, the results are immediate and sustained. And so when the stressor is resolved, you support improved health and well-being.
